Associate Professor Elmie Nekmat  (NUS Communications and New Media) has been honored with the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) Special Recognition Award for his outstanding contributions to the field. This accolade acknowledges his dedication to promoting online safety and his service of over five years, reflecting his commitment to the welfare of digital communities.

In an era where the internet is a double-edged sword, offering vast knowledge but also exposing users to potential harm, A/P Nekmat’s work is crucial. In a video posted on NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Science’s Instagram page, he provides guidelines to shield children from online risks such as cyberbullying, misinformation, and violent content. Recognizing the allure and danger of social media trends, he advises caution, recommending that individuals neither participate in nor propagate potentially dangerous trends.

A/P  Nekmat proposes three essential practices for social media safety. Firstly, he emphasizes the need for users to diligently manage their privacy settings, ensuring control over their online presence. Secondly, he champions the responsible sharing of information, urging individuals to verify content before dissemination to curb the spread of false information. Thirdly, he encourages the reporting of harmful content to platform overseers and law enforcement, thus contributing to a safer online environment.
