Scholarship supported by the GL Louis Programme in Religious Studies

Background

This Scholarship for FASS graduate research students is funded by an endowment established via a generous gift to honor Mr Gnanapragasam Louis’ memory. It aims to foster the academic study of religious pluralism and diverse religious traditions. The preference is for candidates doing research on Christianity.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to all deserving Master’s by research and PhD students undertaking a graduate programme in FASS. The scholarship recipient's thesis must be related to religions. The preference is for candidates doing research on Christianity.

Application Process

New students should indicate their interest in being considered for the scholarship by indicating this under the Source of Finance section ("Other Financial Assistance" > Enter "GL Louis in Religious Studies").

Current students should indicate their interest in being considered for the scholarship by sending an email to the Administrator, which must be accompanied by a letter/email of recommendation from their thesis advisor & recommendation letters from two other faculty members who have taught them. Current students should apply by the same deadlines as the new students.

Value of Award

The scholarship covers:

  • Tuition fees. If the proceeds are insufficient to support the full amount in any given year, a partial subsidy for Master’s International Students will be awarded & the candidate will have to bear the balance. Details will be made known in the offer to the candidate.
  • A possible monthly stipend at the same amount as the NUS Research Scholarship. Award is at the discretion of the Department & may not be offered to every candidate. Details, if any, will be made known in the offer to the candidate.
  • A grant of S$3,000 per candidature to be used for academic purposes related to the recipient's research.

Based on satisfactory progress the scholarship will be renewed on a semestral annual basis. The end-date for the award period is the end of the second year of candidature for Master's candidates and the end of the fourth year of candidature for PhD candidates.

No selection will be made if there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

Acknowledgement

Scholarship recipients are expected to present their findings in and outside the University and acknowledge receipt of the scholarship in presentations and publications.
