FASS Gateway Courses

A gateway course offers an introductory yet comprehensive overview of your desired major. Reading it early on in your academic journey is crucial.

If you already have an idea of the subject you would like to major in, you may declare it during the Academic Plan Declaration (APD) exercise, to be held sometime in mid-July, before the start of your first semester. This is so that we can pre-allocate the gateway course of your primary major in your first semester of study.

Note that gateway courses will fulfil your major requirements.

Pre-allocation of Gateway Courses (prior to Semester 1)

Incoming FASS students will be pre-allocated the gateway course of your declared primary major during the Academic Plan Declaration (APD) exercise, to be held sometime in the middle of July, before the start of your first semester.

We will, where possible, pre-allocate the gateway course of your declared primary major in your first semester of study. If your intended gateway course is over-subscribed, the gateway course will only be pre-allocated to you in your second semester of study. 

If you do not wish to read the gateway course already pre-allocated to you, you may drop them on your own using the Course Registration System (CourseReg) in July.

Lecture groups, tutorial groups & other courses

Do note that only the lecture group will be pre-allocated to you. You will still need to ballot for your tutorial group through the CourseReg system. You will also need to register for the remaining courses you wish to read in your first semester using the CourseReg system. The recommended workload is 20 units of courses per semester, and the maximum workload you can take is 23 units in your first semester (unless you have valid reasons, e.g. USP or DDP).
