Professional Demeanour: Assertive Communication in the Workplace
How to raise a suggestion or request and be heard? How to give feedback and be understood? If these questions keep you up at night, the workshop is for you.
Through the tools and skills discussed, you will practise listening, questioning and feedback-sharing skills that prepare you to ask, suggest, offer and respond in a range of communication contexts clearly and assertively. Learn to observe, check in and articulate your thoughts to navigate personal, social and workplace communication scenarios smoothly.

About the Facilitator
Susan Lee is a Lecturer in CELC. She has taught English communication for 20 years at IHLs and with corporate clients. She is ACTA (WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment) certified and passionate in designing learning to enhance individuals’ skills in presentations, interpersonal communication, negotiation and business writing. She has produced a Coursera module for the course, Effective Communication in the Globalised Workplace. Additionally, Susan designs and facilitates workshops on internship preparation, assertive communication, interviews and branding. Besides professional communication, Susan also teaches a Critique and Expression Course on film adaptation.
Professional Presence in Networking Events and Emails
What exactly does being professional mean? Does it mean conducting yourself in a manner that makes for a positive impression, or does it mean having the competency to perform well at what you do? In this workshop, we will explore what professionalism is and how it could be showcased in two areas – networking and email writing.
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to…
- Break into and exit groups gracefully at networking events,
- Connect with ease and finesse at the first encounter,
- Create memory hook to remember names and faces, and
- Write emails that exude professionalism.

About the Facilitator
Yen Looi CHIN has a Master’s in education, specializing in curriculum development, from University Malaya. She also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) from the same university. She has taught English proficiency courses and academic writing courses to undergraduates in Malaysia and Singapore. Her research interest lies in the use of instructional technology to complement the teaching-learning process.
Mastering the Art of Presentation: Storytelling and Q&A
What makes a convincing, captivating and concise narrative? How do you effectively handle the Q&A aspect after your pitch?
This workshop is all about equipping you with practical skills for giving effective presentations and handling Q&A like a pro. You will have time to carry out tasks and share feedback with your peers along the way. It is all about boosting your confidence and nailing those presentations!

About the Facilitators
Jonathan Phan is an Instructor at the Centre for English Language Communication (CELC). Previously, he taught the Intensive English Programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia, and was formerly a graduate research assistant. He also taught English to primary and secondary students in Malaysian schools. His research interests include English as a Second/Foreign Language, and writing skills for Malaysian indigenous students (Orang Asli).
Hoong Shao Ting is an Instructor in CELC. She holds a BA in Linguistics from University College London, and a MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Oxford. She teaches courses in both communication and language proficiency, and enjoys being heard at public speaking opportunities outside the classroom too
Enhancing Communication Skills for Effective Meetings and Interest-Based Negotiations
In this workshop, you will learn the art of effective communication in meetings and negotiations. Understand the similarities and differences between meetings and negotiations, discovering the central role of communication in both. Learn strategies for active listening, skilful questioning, and problem-solving, and dive into the nuances of verbal and non-verbal communication. Through engaging activities and role plays, elevate your communication skills and gain the confidence to navigate dynamic communication situations – vital for your academic and professional success.

About the Facilitator
Norhayati Ismail is a Senior Lecturer with the Centre for English Language Communication (CELC), NUS. For the past 25 years, she has designed and taught professional communication courses to students from Business, Computing, Design & Engineering, where skills from negotiation, pitching, and proposal writing are covered. She has also facilitated workplace communication skills workshops for working adults in diverse fields including professional services, logistics, IT and administration. Norhayati was Associate Director of CELC for more than 5 years, during which she led the Centre’s Search Committee and oversaw a whole suite of consultancy programmes for workplace communication skills training.

You are welcome to take all 4 workshops to have a comprehensive understanding of workplace communication. However, you also have the option to participate in individual workshops based on your specific needs and preferences.
Your attendance will be captured during the workshop, please ensure that you complete the attendance form. You do not need to upload any screenshot/photo for the activity.Â
However, if you encounter issues submitting the attendance form during the workshop, please take a photo of your matriculation card with the QR code slide and email it to beatrice@nus.edu.sg.

The workshops are open to FASS undergraduates only.
