CNM Digital Economies Roundtable | Platform Futures: The Promise & Perils of Web 3.0

Web 3.0 promises novel ways of socialising and doing business online. The much-hyped, hyper-mobile site (space? form?) of Web 3.0 is much discussed, but hard to pin down. Metaverses; blockchains and decentralised communities require a careful engagement to asses the potentials, but also the potential perils of new tech developments. This roundtable, moderated by Dr Rosemary Overell (NUS Communications and New Media, CNM) as part of the Digital Economies module, invites Dr Renyi Hong (NUS CNM) and Dr Olivier Jutel (Media, Film & Communication, the University of Otago) to discuss some of the antagonisms Web 3.0 presents.

Panelists
Renyi Hong is Assistant Professor in Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore. He is interested in labor and its relationships with affect, technology, and capitalism. His first monograph, Passionate Work explores the uses of passion as a means of generating a milieu of endurance for those left out of the good life. His monograph in development, Bearable Media, examines the biopolitical relationship between human adaptation and computational media. His works can be found in Social Text, New Media & Society, European Journal of Cultural Studies, among others.

Olivier Jutel is a lecturer at the University of Otago, where he teaches communication and digital media. Prior to this he worked as a broadcast journalism lecturer at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. His work on blockchain has been shaped by this time in the Pacific where he followed the role of the US State dept in the emergence of Techno-Solutionism in the NGO space. His latest work on Blockchain includes "Blockchain Imperialism in the Pacific" for Big Data & Society and the forthcoming "Blockchain Humanitarianism and Crypto-Colonialism" for Cell Press' Patterns.
