Internship Courses & Details
Starting from Semester 1 of AY2022/23, we will increase the courses offered under FASS IP from three to six. Current students are eligible to take the new courses, as long as they fulfil the pre-requisites.
The change will expand the options available to FASS students, so that they could pursue multiple internships to gain a diverse range of experiences. This will help to strengthen their profile and enhance their employability upon graduation.

Advice for students who are planning to take FAS2552 FASS Extended Internship and FAS2552A FASS Extended Internship II
While an internship can be an important element to facilitate the transition from university to the corporate world, students who wish to participate in internships during a semester should carefully consider the following:
- You are strongly encouraged to discuss with your academic advisor and plan your studies carefully. FASS encourages students who wish to intern during a regular semester to do so with FAS2552/FAS2552A, for which they can earn 8 Units in Unrestricted Electives (UE). However, keep in mind that the internship semester counts towards your candidature and you are thus required to pay full semester fees. (This also means that you get to maintain your status as a current NUS student during your internship and thus enjoy continued access to NUS medical and insurance benefits.)
- Students who are enrolled in FAS2552/FAS2552A are allowed to have a decreased workload (less than 18 Units) for the semester and are allowed to register for other courses provided they do not interfere with the internship. That being said, you must have a written approval and understanding from your instructor and your employer before you register for the additional courses.
In addition, to ensure that you will be able to graduate on time, we will review your study plan before approving your internship application. You may need to overload during the semesters or take Special Term courses before and/or after the internship semester so that you can graduate on time.
Important Information
Planning guidelines
Students may pursue the internship course concurrently with other courses, but only with approval from the company or organization, and FASS Deanery. Like any other NUS course, each FASS Internship Programme course may only be used once.
Cohort 2016 to 2020 : FASS students who have completed or are pursuing the year-long NOC programmes are not allowed to read FASS Internship Programme courses. This includes any combination of NOC programmes amounting to a year. Students should, therefore, consider their options carefully before embarking on their internships.
Students going on SEP are not allowed to enroll in any course during the SEP semester.
Credits & grading
The FASS Internship Programme courses are used to fulfill UE and are graded on CS/CU basis. Internships that were performed while on LOA cannot be used to earn credit.
Internship courses in graduating year
Students in the graduating year are only allowed to intern with FAS2551/FAS2551A and may not take more internship courses to delay graduation. Students are reminded that they are expected to graduate on time. From Cohort 2016 onwards, penalties will be levied for students who do not graduate on time. The expected time to graduation are:
- 6 regular semesters for BA
- 8 regular semesters for BA (Hons) or BSocSci (Hons)
International Students
Working during term vacations:
All international students* studying in NUS on ICA's student pass are eligible to work during term vacations without having to apply for work permit.
Working during academic term time:
International students* are allowed to work not more than 16 hours per week.
*International students here refers to NUS full-time matriculated students.
