Programme Requirements

Duration of Candidature

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) programme is offered only on a full-time basis. The rest of the coursework programmes are available on both full-time and part-time basis. Only those resident in Singapore are eligible for part-time study.

The candidature periods are as follows:

Residency Requirement

Students in graduate coursework programmes must meet the minimum residency requirements as follows:

Type of Programme Minimum Residency
  • Graduate Diploma/Graduate Coursework Programmes
  • NUS portion of Double Degree Programmes with other universities
  • 100% of programme units must be NUS courses, which are defined as courses taught, co-taught, supervised or co-supervised by one or more NUS faculty members, regardless of location.
  • At least 20% of programme units must be earned in physical residence at NUS, which are defined as NUS campuses in Singapore and NUS entities overseas (e.g., NUS Research Institutes).

Curricular Requirement

Successful applicants may be required to take the Diagnostic English Test. They will be placed on a graduate English course or be exempted from the course, depending on their performance in the proficiency test. A Master's student is required to achieve an intermediate level of proficiency (at least grade C) in the graduate English courses.

Continuation Requirement

To continue in a Graduate Diploma programme, students must note the following:

  • Where a course is required for the graduate candidature and the minimum grade is not met, a student may repeat:
    • the same course only once. The improved grade point of the repeat/replaced course will replace the weaker one in the GPA (Grade Point Average) computation in the semester in which the successful attempt is made; and
    • one‐third of the curricular requirements not exceeding three courses, whichever is lower.

To continue in a Masters programme, students must note the following:

  •  Where a course is required for the graduate candidature and the minimum grade is not met, a student may repeat:
    • the same course only once. The improved grade point of the repeat/replaced course will replace the weaker one in the GPA (Grade Point Average) computation in the semester in which the successful attempt is made; and
    • one‐third of the curricular requirements not exceeding three courses, whichever is lower; and
  • The GPA must not be below 3.0 (but ≥ 2.5) for three consecutive semesters or below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters.

For any semester in which the student's GPA falls below 3.0 (but ≥ 2.5), that student will be issued an academic warning. If, in the following semester, the student's GPA again falls below 3.0, he/she will be placed on probation. If the student's GPA remains below 3.0 for the third consecutive semester, the student will be issued a letter of dismissal and denied re-admission.

For students whose GPA fall below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, they will be placed on probation for the first semester, followed by dismissal in the second semester.

All students of the Master of Psychology (Clinical) programme are also required to pass every NUS course with at least a B- grade. Students who fail to achieve this will have to retake such courses and bear the full tuition costs on a per unit basis while they repeat the courses for which they did not attain a minimum satisfactory (B-) grade. Students who do not attain the minimum grade will only be allowed to repeat the course once. In addition, students who receive unsatisfactory grades for the same clinical placement twice, will be discontinued from the programme regardless of GPA. In cases where there is evidence of a significant failure in duty of care to clients seen under supervision, incompetency or gross misconduct, the clinical faculty retains the right to terminate a placement at any time. In such cases, the placement will be considered a failure.

Graduation Requirement

A candidate will be recommended for award of degree once he/she has met the requirements stated above. Students may take more than the minimum necessary number of courses (comprising all required courses within the curricular requirements and in the subject/related disciplines). A student who wants to read more than the minimum relevant courses required for graduation can do so only within the period during which he/she is working towards completing and fulfilling the graduation requirements. Once a student has fulfilled the graduation requirements, he/she will be required to proceed with graduation and will not be allowed to stay on for additional semester(s) or term(s). Generally, only the grades for the minimum necessary courses shall be considered in assessing whether the candidate has met the degree requirement.
