  • Congratulations to Prof Matthias Roth on being awarded the 2023 Masatoshi YOSHINO Award by the Association of Japanese Geographers for his contributions to "new developments in the field of urban climatology by clarifying the characteristics of urban climate in tropical regions and the characteristics of turbulence within the urban canopy layer, and for contributing to the international research community of urban climatology”.
  • Congratulations Dr Shaun Teo on winning the prestigious Urban Geography Early Career Researcher Prize.
  • Dr Menusha De Silva’s commentary on older Singaporeans' changing eldercare expectations was published on TODAY Online.
  • Congratulations to Prof Henry Yeung for winning the 2024 ISA Asia-Pacific Distinguished Book Award, sponsored by the International Studies Association (ISA). The book is published by Stanford University Press and titled Interconnected Worlds: Global Electronics and Production Networks in East Asia’. It has previously won a Silver Medal in the Business Theory Category from the 2023 Axiom Business Book Awards”.
  • Congratulations to Dr Gretchen Coffman for winning a Bronze at the 2023 QS Reimagine Education Awards under the Immersive Experiential Learning category. This award is considered the “Oscars” of the education world, and honours innovative approaches to enhance learning outcomes and improve employability, helping to shape the future of education.

  • Dr Kamalini Ramdas moderated the Singapore Writers Festival keynote delivered virtually by third-wave feminist writer Judith Butler (see Straits Times write up about the event).
  • Prof Henry Yeung took the lead in authoring a chapter on semiconductors (No. 4), a hot policy issue, for the recently launched Global Value Chain Development Report 2023 sponsored by the World Trade Organisation, Asian Development Bank, Japan’s JETRO, and China’s UIBE.
  • Congratulations to graduate student Ms Chia Su Min, Michelle for winning the Graduate Students' Teaching Award, for teaching undertaken in Semester 2, 2022-2023!
  • Congratulations to fourth year undergraduate Ting Wai Kit for co-founding a new global youth network committed to ensuring sustainable wildlife trade and combatting wildlife crime, called the Cites Global Youth Network. Wai Kit also delivered a presentation this week at the Earthshot Prize Awards, which was founded by Prince William (Britain) in 2020 (also featured in Straits Times⁠).
  • Ms Yuki Ong, a recent graduate of Geography (Minors in Geoscience and GIS), co-founder of @greenloopfarms, and a staunch advocate for sustainable food production, is currently being featured in several social media postings, c/o FASS Strategic Communications/NUS Communications Office.

  • Professor Henry Yeung gave an invited plenary session talk on "Trade and geography: 21st century evidence on trade and the localisation of production", together with Marc Melitz (Harvard), Anabel Gonzalez (Deputy Director-General, World Trade Organization), Pinelopi Goldberg (Yale and former Chief Economist of World Bank) and others, at the 2023 Heckscher-Ohlin Conference on Thursday 11 May 2023.   • Congratulations to Prof Henry Yeung for winning Silver Medal in the Business Theory Category from the 2023 Axiom Business Book Awards. The book is titled ‘Interconnected Worlds: Global Electronics and Production Networks in East Asia’. Previous medalists include Nobel laureate Robert Shiller, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, philanthopist and investor Raymond Dalio, as well as many other business and thought leaders.

2022

  • Alumni Mr Nicholas Ong (2022) won the third prize for the National Writing Competition organised by National Youth Achievement Award Council and SPH Media, themed "Towards a sustainable Singapore: How youth can make a difference". Nicholas says “In my essay, I proposed the '3Green' youth-centric framework. This is inspired by various strands of Geographical knowledge I have acquired in university.”
  • Dr Kamalini Ramdas and Dr Nathan Green participated in the Global Youth Leader’s Summit as topical experts on gender relations, and deforestation in Asia respectively. The three-day conference is part of the Deanery’s collaboration with Departments to pursue strategic approaches to student outreach.

  • Feminist Dreaming: The Future From HereDr Kamalini Ramdas gave a keynote at the Singapore Writers Festival. She drew on her experiences in teaching and activism to highlight that beyond protests, classroom discussions and personal conversations are subtle ways of fostering debate about feminism and equality.
  • Congratulations to Prof Henry Yeung on his award of the 2022 Sir Peter Hall Award from the Regional Studies Association (RSA). The RSA focuses on regional and urban research, development and policy.
  • High-Rise Areas are Hotter than Low-Rise Residential Areas in Singapore. Professor Matthias Roth shares about a six-year study of heat in urban and rural areas in Singapore, which is one of the most comprehensive in a tropical city to date.

  • Congratulations to Dr Jasnea Sarma, a PhD candidate co-supervised by Prof James Sidaway for being awarded the Wang Gungwu Medal and Prize under the category of the Best PhD Thesis in Social Sciences & Humanities for AY2021/2022! Her thesis was titled “Seeing like a border: Resource frontiers, voices and visions on Myanmar’s borderlands with India and China”.
  • Congratulations to Dr Remi Luo on his appointment to a Presidential Young Professorship (PYP) in the Department. 
  • Professor Henry Yeung has published a book titled Interconnected Worlds: Global Electronics and Production Networks in East Asia. Prof Yeung analyses the geographical configurations (“where”), organizational strategies (“how”), and causal drivers (“why”) of global production networks, setting a definitive benchmark into the dynamic transformations in global electronics and other globalized industries.
  • Studying the Invisible in Earth’s Ecosystems - Dr Remi Luo studies the interactions between climate change and natural ecosystems, delving into the part that processes like leaf gas exchange play in offsetting human carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Congratulations to Professor James Sidaway upon his award of the Busk Medal by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers). The Busk Medal is awarded for "fieldwork and engagement with a remarkable span of theoretical approaches".The Busk Medal is part of a series of awards from the RGS/IBG that have recently been announced recognising "extraordinary achievement in geographical research, fieldwork, teaching, policy, and public engagement".
  • Congratulations Dr. Gretchen Coffman for having been awarded a NUS Annual Digital Education Award (Individual category) for 2022. The award by the University Teaching Excellence Committee recognises innovative teaching in an online environment and/or developing and using digital technologies for teaching.

  • Dr. Miles Kenney-Lazar has been featured in an episode of The Sweaty Penguin, an educational and comedic podcast about climate change, which is partnered with Peril and Promise, a PBS/WNET public media initiative. He discusses his research on sustainability issues related to natural rubber production in Southeast Asia
  • Hear from a geographer’s perspective during Social Sciences Panel 1. Dr. Kamalini Ramdas will facilitate and speak with colleagues from Communications and New Media, Political Science and Sociology on “Interdisciplinary Conversations on Social Issues” from 4:00pm to 4:50pm at the CHS Open House on 28 February.
